in HRM at The University of Strathclyde. Danny’s doctoral research
focused on “The friendship experiences of senior managers…”
and also explored the associated factors that influence individual
and collective wellbeing and performance in organisations.
Danny’s key research conclusions were:
- Organisations that encourage the development of friendships
at work, as part of their culture and beliefs system, can expect
employees that are highly engaged in the organisation and its
objectives, high performance that is sustainable, less sickness
absence.
- An understanding of the power of friendship as a force for good
in organisations is absent in the history of management theory
and practice.
- Many leaders are not comfortable with encouraging friendship
at work because they fear loss of control, time-wasting, cliques
and romantic liaisons.
